Shilajit is an ancient natural medicine used by Indian Ayurvedic practitioners for at least the last 5000 years. Its high nutritional content has benefits that are far-reaching for our health, including our brain health.
The use of it as a medicine originates from Ancient India with a documented history of use for just over 5000 years. The word Shilajit is Sanskrit for “Conqueror of Mountains,” alluding to the fact that it enhances a person’s strength and vitality.
This black resin has formed over millions of years from decomposing plant matter, making abundantly rich in nutrients that most food is depleted of on the planet today. It is rich in more than 80 trace minerals in counting, all of which are in the right proportions for health and vitality.
For optimal bodily function, including brain function, trace minerals are critical.
When one understands this, then it’s hardly surprising that it is used to treat and enhance treatments for every single ailment in Ayurveda!
Our brains need trace minerals to do everything, including:
- Repair damaged tissues and generate more cells, such as neurons.
- Activate our mitochondria for energy, immune support and to protect our brains from free radical damage.
- Create proteins, enzymes and other secretions that are used for literally every process carried out in the body.
- Detoxify each cell, removing impurities and waste products from our systems.
Shilajit also contains a wealth of nutrients over and above its impressive trace mineral content, making it one of the most supreme nutritional supplements of all time.
Here are just a few of Shilajit’s components to give you an idea of just how loaded this stuff is!
- B, C, E Vitamins
- Dibenzo-Alpha Pyrones
- Folic Acid
- Fulvic Acid
- Humic Acids
- Tannic Acid
Many of the components above act as potent antioxidants, enriching our bodies and minds to bring about equilibrium.
The antioxidant potency of Shilajit should not be taken lightly.
The vast majority of it is packed with antioxidant components, such as vitamins, polyphenols, bioflavonoids like carotenoids, and certain minerals like zinc and magnesium.
Vitamin C and E work hand-in-hand to prevent damage to the skin by protecting the lipid bilayers, repairing, rehydrating and nourishing the skin. When applied to the brain, which is loaded with lipids (fats), it confers a similar protective action.
Polyphenols and bioflavonoids are plant-derived antioxidants which have been proven to increase lifespan by protecting against free radicals. These are the compounds that give color to our diet and give highly beneficial foods – like green tea, dark chocolate and blueberries – their healthful reputation and medicinal effects.
Shilajit contains an abundant source of every single one of the 21 essential trace minerals required by our bodies and most of them also act as antioxidants.
These trace minerals do this in two ways, either by supplying our immune systems with the ingredients they need to produce bodily antioxidants (like glutathione) or by having a direct protective action themselves. Some of them, such as Zinc, do both!
Shilajit is also one of the best natural sources of Fulvic Acid (mispronounced as “flu-vic” acid in the video!)
Fulvic acid (said like “full-vick”) is a product of decomposing soil bacteria that allows for inorganic minerals to be transformed into ionic organic minerals. This makes it possible for both plants and animals to absorb minerals. Fulvic Acid Benefits
This substance acts as a trace mineral sponge, binding up to 60 different ionic minerals at one time and the main reason Shilajit is so high in minerals.
Once ingested, fulvic acid penetrates directly through cell membranes, taking all the minerals directly to where they need to go. It then trades these healthful minerals for heavy metal pollutants before leaving your cells, expelling toxins from your body that would otherwise cause damage or neurodegeneration!
Last but not least, shilajit contains a secret free-radical busting weapon within its core: buckminsterfullerene.
Buckminsterfullerenes (aka Carbon 60 or Buckyballs) are a unique form of carbon that is found in soot, smoke, and even stardust. They have a spherical cage-like structure that resembles a soccer ball and when combined with other antioxidants as in Shilajit, each of the 60 nodes of this structure can mop up a free radicalThe prolongation of the lifespan of rats by repeated oral administration of fullerene before leaving your body!
Carbon-60 forms bonds in Shilajit with Dibenzo-Alpha Pyrones, which also exude potent antioxidant effects.
All the antioxidants work to detoxify and protect the mitochondria from harm as well as nourishing them, which allows them to keep on producing energy.
Mitochondria produce energy by breaking the bonds in ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which in turn generates electrons that are harvested for energy – like some kind of organic battery!
The Dibenzo-Alpha Pyrones in Shilajit act as a reservoir of electronsCoQ10 Technology, providing more of an energy source to mitochondria as well as speeding up the process of creating more energy.
Neurons have an especially high concentration of mitochondria so that they can move and grow to form new neural connections. More energy means more neuroplasticity and a smarter brain!
When a microtubule falls apart, it forms neurofibrillary tangles which is one of the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s Disease and similar forms of neurodegeneration.
Tau protein is the primary substance that stabilizes microtubule structure, which is why it is often quoted in relation to Alzheimer’s and neurofibrillary tangles.
It was recently discovered that Tau is regulated by another protein known as PP2A, which stabilizes microtubule structure when activated.
Phosphoric acid – a form of phosphorus – as well as phospholipids, such as sphingomyelin (think myelin sheath) and other sphingolipids, activate PP2A. Both phosphorus and phospholipids are found inside Shilajit!
To top this all off, studies have proven that Fulvic Acid alone (which is found in Shilajit), blocks the aggregation of Tau proteinShilajit: A Natural Phytocomplex with Potential Procognitive Activity, further protecting your brain from neurodegeneration.
Therefore, Shilajit will prevent Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of neurodegeneration by protecting from free radical damages and keeping your microtubules and neurons healthy.
- The first way would be the Fulvic Acid portion, which enters through all cellular membranes and trades out beneficial trace minerals for harmful pollutants before exiting the body.
Fulvic Acid is a potent detoxifier and metal chelating agent, capable of binding to 60 or more molecules at any given time and thoroughly purifying each of your cells!
- The second way would be the buckminsterfullerene portion. Carbon-60 is another powerful molecule found in Shilajit that can hold up to 60 free radicals at one time (depending on their size), before leaving your body without causing any damage.
Carbon-60 molecules are also nano-sized, allowing them to slip directly into DNA and remove impurities from the core of your cells!
- The third way Shilajit enhances detox is by kickstarting your immune system with nutrients and energy. When the mitochondria are functioning optimally, they also create all sorts of antioxidants using their own pool of DNASelenium and brain function: a poorly recognized liaison.
Glutathione and Superoxide-Dismutase (SOD) are a couple of chelating/detoxifying compounds our own bodies make in the mitochondria. These compounds require Selenium, Molybdenum, Manganese and a few other minerals that are deficient in most soils around the world today, all nutrients that Shilajit is abundant in.
- The fourth and final way is that certain minerals, like Zinc, chelate heavy metals and toxins themselves in the body.
Another good example is organic Silicon in Shilajit, which will bind to Aluminium and take it out the brain – a particularly nasty pollutant that has been shown to bioaccumulate and contribute to dementia over time.
This applies even more so to growing infants and children who need vital nutrients to ensure their brains can develop properly. Many reports show that children deficient in certain trace minerals, like iodine from iodine-deficient mothers, can cause brain damage, retardation and growth arrest.
Scientific revealed that Shilajit does indeed enhance cognition, memory, and learning. Those who have supplemented on Shilajit all report a clearer mind and more energy to think better with.
Our forefathers used to ingest Fulvic and Humic Acids in micro amounts on vegetables along with this (now lost) nutrition, which would keep them healthy, detoxed and strong.
While eating a healthy diet and avoiding processed foods is one key aspect of fending off neurodegenerative disorders and aging, Shilajit and fulvic acids are another – especially in the world we currently find ourselves in.
However, there are a few supplements that work very synergistically with Shilajit!
Both Chia Seeds and Pure Fish Oil are a rich dietary source of Omega-3s, which are critical to maintaining healthy brain function. Chia Seeds also contain all 9 essential amino acids and a high amount of protein, all of which the brain laps up as extra fuel!
Aside from ensuring one gets adequate amounts of nutrition, you also need to eat fiber-rich foods and some probiotic foods to encourage a healthy gut microbiome.
As a bonus, the fulvic acid and nutrients in Shilajit also help promote optimal gut health by securing the right pH and fueling your microbiome!
